Key Takeaways

Most coconut water brands claim 'no added sugar.' That is usually true — but there are differences the label does not make obvious at first glance.

TL;DR

Most coconut water brands claim "no added sugar." That is usually true — but there are differences the label does not make obvious at first glance. Some brands use concentrate instead of fresh coconut water. Others blend varieties that deliver fewer nutrients. And "no added sugar" is not the same as "sugar-free": every coconut water contains natural fruit sugar — between 2 and 6 g per 100 ml. The difference comes down to coconut variety, processing, and label honesty. We compared six brands you can buy in Germany. No advertising, just data.

What "No Added Sugar" Really Means

In the EU, Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 governs health and nutrition claims. For sugar, two terms matter:

  • "Sugar-free": Less than 0.5 g sugar per 100 ml. No pure coconut water passes this bar — natural fruit sugar sits at 2-6 g.
  • "No added sugar": No sugar, honey, syrup, or sweetening concentrate was added during production.

In short: when the label says "no added sugar," it only means nobody added sweetener. The coconut's own sugar is still there — and that is a good thing. It delivers energy alongside potassium and other electrolytes.

Concentrate vs. Not-from-Concentrate

This is where taste enters the picture. Coconut water from concentrate was evaporated, shipped in reduced form, then rehydrated with water at the destination. It cuts transport costs — but also flavour and nutrient density.

Not-from-concentrate means the water was bottled directly from the coconut. No evaporation, no reconstitution. A study from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (2020) found that not-from-concentrate coconut water retains up to 30% more minerals than its concentrated counterpart.

Here is how to spot it on the label: if "coconut water" is the sole ingredient, you are good. If it reads "coconut water from coconut water concentrate," it was reconstituted. Some Vita Coco products on German shelves carry exactly that wording.

How to Read the Ingredient List

The rule is simple: shorter is better. Pure coconut water needs exactly one ingredient — coconut water. Anything beyond that deserves a second look.

Red flags on the label:

  • "Fruit juice concentrate" or "fruit puree" as an ingredient — adds sweetness without counting as "added sugar"
  • "Natural flavours" — can indicate diluted or flavour-weak source water
  • Multiple origin countries without specification — often a sign of rotating supply blends

A clean label means:

  • One ingredient: coconut water
  • One origin country
  • No concentrate
  • No added flavours

Of the six brands in our comparison, Kumaio, KULAU, and innocent meet these criteria. PONDI will too.

Why King Coconut Tastes Naturally Sweeter

King coconut (Cocos nucifera var. aurantiaca) is a distinct botanical variety, cultivated almost exclusively in Sri Lanka. It was selectively bred over centuries not for its flesh, but for its drinking water.

A 2024 DPPH assay at the University of Jaffna measured a higher polyphenol content in king coconut water than in green coconut water varieties. Its potassium content sits at approximately 250 mg per 100 ml — documented by the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka.

The sweetness does not come from higher sugar — it comes from the flavour profile. A different balance of minerals and natural sugars. Genetics, not syrup.

In Germany, only two brands currently offer real king coconut water: Kumaio and, soon, PONDI.

Our Verdict

We sell coconut water. So we have an interest in you buying ours. We know that — and you should know it too.

But we believe the label should tell the truth. One ingredient, one origin country, no concentrate. Whoever delivers that earns your trust — whether it is our brand or another.

PONDI is not in stores yet. We are working on it. If you want to know when we launch: sign up at getpondi.com.

FAQ

No. All coconut water contains natural fruit sugar — between 2 and 6 g per 100 ml depending on the coconut variety. Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006, a product may only be labelled 'sugar-free' if it contains less than 0.5 g sugar per 100 ml. No pure coconut water meets that threshold. The honest label is 'no added sugar' — meaning no sweetener was added during production, while the coconut's own natural sugar remains.

King coconut (Cocos nucifera var. aurantiaca) was selectively bred on Sri Lanka for over 2,000 years specifically for its drinking water. The result: a higher natural sugar and electrolyte profile — without any added sugar. The sweetness is genetics, not syrup.

If the ingredient list reads 'coconut water from coconut water concentrate' or 'reconstituted coconut water,' the water was evaporated and later rehydrated. Not-from-concentrate means it was bottled directly. The taste is fresher and the nutrient profile is more complete.
